Japanese Eating Manner

Japanese food is always beautifully presented and even after living here
for many years I didn`t know what I should eat first, when served with a
traditional meal.
It just so happened that one of my Heart to Heart students has recently
come back from a zen temple and has re-learned and taught me how to
eat in the correct manner.
First you start with tasting one of the side dishes, then you may sample
the rice; last but not least, you may then drink the miso soup.
When all that is in front of you is consumed it is then customary to pour
green tea into the empty side dishes , the rice bowl and finally the miso
soup bowl and finally after a long hard earned thirst, you may drink the tea!
This is done so that all dishes have been cleaned properly and nothing
has gone to waste.
One learns something new every day; although after interviewing several
of my Japanese colleagues and friends they didn`t seem to have any idea
what they should start with first either; when eating in the true traditional
manner!

Dear Clarissa, the Japanese surely do have some peaceful traditions. I thought I would share with the readers my family traditions, this is how it goes:-
1. Whine and whine and whine that you can’t possibly wait for it to be cooked and repeat it takes to long over and over again.
2. “Is it ready yet Mum?” stage where I repeat a few times “nearly”.
3. It’s ready now, so sitting at the table but now it’s to hot and of course takes to long to cool down!
4. Now it’s cooled I spend the next 10 minutes repeating myself trying to get them to sit still, eat with their mouths closed, don’t slouch, elbows of etc.
5. Exhausted I sit back and realize they are a
copy of me and laugh to myself
Oh well, they’ll get it eventually… I hope!

Hi, Clarissa!

I know a Japanese custom called “Hashi nurashi”, which means wetting chopsticks.
When eating starts and chopsticks are still dried, foods are easiry glued to them.
In order to avoid such situation, people use their chopsticks to drink soi-soup first.
This custom is very effective when you use disposable wooden chopsticks much more than lacquered ones.

Though you may agree that this custom is practical one, there are few Japanese to know this recentry.

I prefer eating food as I feel without following the step.
This way I satisfied eating food.

But it will be good to know the correct manner, then eat how we want.
I m japanese, but I dont know much about Japanese good manner.

Thank you for your valued advice Kon-chan. Like I said, one learns something new everyday. I usually am so hungry before sitting down to eat, I wonder if I will remember to follow your advice. Just recently I knocked
miso soup all over the tray and into my bag which was ever so smelly. My friends and I took a long time washing it and getting the smell out!

Haha ha Karen…. guess some things haven`t changed. When you`re hungry; you`re hungry, baby!!! And great to see the gorgeous babes take after you.

Hi Mitsuyoshi!! Remember my miso soup bag? Its not smelly anymore. Had a wonderful time with all you love ly people in the mountains. A very special time…

This picture reminds me of the many wonderful meals I had while I was in Japan. My mouth is watering just looking at it! I love the way that the food is presented and the mixture and balance of taste, although I didn’t know there was a correct order to follow. I have been travelling to many different countries but Japanese food would still have to be my favourite. I am now preparing to go to Spain where the people there enjoy their food, so I am really looking forward to it.

Hi ya Kathy!

My, my you`re going to do it sister! So many years ago we sat together talking about this pilgrimage that we were going to venture on together upon! Even though I am not with you I will try and imagine what you are going through, and the quests that will take you over mountain tops and beyond.Go with the Divine and know that I love you with every step that you make. I can`t wait for the feedback in detail so I can shake, rattle and breath-take.
